New Year’s Practices (2025.01.04)

I saw a Reel on Instagram the other day.

It was about changing New Year’s Resolutions into New Year’s Practices.

Because, people make resolutions at the start of a year and tend to make it an all-or-nothing. Like once they mess up once, it’s all over. By replacing the word “resolution” with “practice,” you make “the thing” into something you are working on.

Does that make sense? I guess it’s just a way to take the pressure off of yourself.

My New Year’s Practices

  1. Take 10,000 steps per day
  2. Read 10 pages of a book
  3. Write a blog post once a day

It’s still the 4th day of the year, so I’ve been able to keep most of the practices so far. But tonight, as I write this post past 11:00pm, I noticed that I was right under 9000 steps for the day. There is a part of me that wants to go out into the cold night and just walk around in the dark just so I can hit my little goal for the day, but I decided that I’ll write this post instead. It’s not all-or-nothing, so The 8900 steps I took are there, and that’s closer to 10,000 than 0.

That’s how I want to live in 2025, I’ll try my best to keep up with my practices, but I won’t force it. I tried to take 10,000 steps per day in 2024 too, and I was above my goal until around August when it got too hot to be walking outside to get places. I ended the year with an average of 8700 steps per day, and I was happy with that.
