Road Trip Day 4

10:00am – Marifu Coffee, Iwakuni

We started the day with breakfast at Marifu Coffee, a local cafe with just two locations in Iwakuni. The three of us shared a pork cutlet sandwich, waffles and breakfast plate.

12:00pm – Miyajima

We took the train to Miyajimaguchi station, then transferred to a ferry to get to Miyajima Island. We walked over to see the giant torii gate while the tide was high and said hi to the deers that roam around the island.

1:30pm – Yakigaki no Hayashi

Miyajima is known for their oysters, so we enjoyed some raw, grilled and fried oysters at Yakigaki no Hayashi. They were all delicious and went great with a cold glass of beer.

3:00pm – Gebura

Last year when I was in Miyajima, I saw that there were these bars that served drinks to go, with 200 yen refills. I didn’t get it the last time, but was determined to try it if I ever returned. I finally got my Setonaikai Lemon Sour and 200 yen refill! The only problem is that in January, it’s a little too cold to be walking around outside with a ice cold drink hand. My fingers got numb and I dropped my cup…good thing my drink was already empty. They also have seats at the bars, so I’d recommend just having your drink there and keep your hands open while you walk around.

3:30pm – Miyajima Aquarium

We were in between going up the ropeway or checking out the aquarium, but the weather wasn’t that great, so we decided to go see the sea animals. The aquarium was much bigger and nicer than I expected on a small island. We got in just in time to see the sea lion show and a few feedings. There was also a pond of Doctor Fish that you can stick your hand in to feed your dead skin cells.

5:30pm – Train back to Iwakuni

Before we headed back to Iwakuni, we got some Momiji Manjyu to eat while we wait for the train. Another Miyajima delicacy that most people get as souvenirs for friends and family.

8:00pm – Vital Yawd, Iwakuni

For dinner we went to Vital Yawd for jerk chicken. My friend says he goes there once or twice a week. That’s how good it is, period.
The owner is a twenty-something year old boy, and the shop is run by his family, including his parents and siblings. Of the two times I’ve been there, I’ve seen more Jager shots given away than the number of customers. The friendly atmosphere and delicious chicken make this restaurant a must-go spot in Iwakuni.

10:00pm – Another night in Iwakuni

Stayed another night at our friends house.
